RE: Awning issue

The awning arms need to install in a vertical spot in order to clear a window or door . If u have a slider window, i would try to have the awning cover the screened portion to limit light rain from entering the rv. Scroll here to see the awning pic. https://www.rvtrader.com/listing/2013-Thor+Motor+Coach-Majestic+19G-5027942920 If u choose to buy an electric awning , you will be dealing with a motor, switch, fuse and wiring which can all fail. Learn how to by- pass or repair such so u don't get stuck with a deployed awning when trying to vacate a campsite. Many elec awnings can be cranked back in using a hand drill and appropriate sized socket in the event of a motor failure. If this seems too involved u can opt for a mechanical pull out awning minus those elec parts. 12v motors that are used in rv’s are usually not the best quality motors. You just need to know how to remedy a situation because it’s a tad difficult to drive with your awning out. :B It’s common sense to retract the awning when you leave the rv for an extended period of time to go hiking or whatever. Storms with strong winds can appear fast with little warning, ripping off of the rv and causing expensive filon damage as well as trashing the awning.

RE: F550 thoughts?

Should be fine driving it with air-brakes and a regular operators drivers license. Under 26,000 lbs , non- commercial privately owned vehicle.

RE: Plumbing Management

If you have the truck , going to the truck camper would not be a bad idea for you. I carried the bike on a ladder rack for 40,000 miles leaving easy access to the door. When i went from my TC’s to my class C , i missed the ground clearance of the TC. The class C rear hitch dragged on my driveway apron. The TC is quiet driving too. No dishes, pots n pans rattling.

RE: Plumbing Management

I decided no more towing and got an entry level Class C to see if I'd like it. If you’re asking about towing the Maverick….you’re back to towing, and you would be towing with a noisy tow vehicle. :). You really need to look into bringing a toad with a small class C. I hardly ever bring my car anymore. Its more difficult hitching up without a spotter . Try it first. If traveling alone , you would need pull-thru sites to avoid unhitching somewhere near the site in order to back-in the motorhome. Finding available pull-thru sites might be difficult at times. Bilstein shocks would be an improvement but expensive. I would experiment using different air pressures in ALL the tires first . A good positive caster alignment would help a lot with crosswind wondering while driving.

RE: 2006 Fleetwood Tioga 26Q 4 season capability?

In general from taking apart a lot of rvs , Im not too sure if a 2006 rv would be very 4 season capable. 4 season thinking came more into play in later years. If you have a slide- out, i hope you have a floor-plan to be able to close it at night. Less volume to heat as well as keeping a tighter seal. Slides have thinner walls and do not have too much insulation in them. They use a lot of propane in cold temps. You would also need to climb up to clear its roof from snow and ice to be able to close it. Non slide rvs or slide floorplans that allow full interior use work much better in cold temps. Keep a roof vent cracked open to prevent condensation and use insulated interior covers on the others. Single pane windows do not work well in cold temps when the interior is heated. A cheap fix … Storm windows can be fabricated by using heat shrink plastic sandwiched between two pieces of DOW insulation board . You can cut out a hole in the center of the boards to see out of. The clear heat shrink acts as your window. They are held in place by trimming the insulation so it fits snug to the windows frame , held in place by pressure. This system worked very well for me for many years. I also added an electric blanket for sleeping and lowering the thermostat and added a winter drape to cover the inside of the rv entrance door. That’s a major cold air leak source. Keeping the slide retracted at night and doing those mods cut my propane use in half. Im not sure if a 2006 rv used Pex water lines or not but even though Pex would be a good thing it’s the plastic valves, petcocks and water line connectors that crack and leak from the cold. *Learn how to change and swap out fittings and make sure you have the correct tool to do so. Keep in mind during winter rv living , if the water pump constantly cycles or pulses on its own, that’s an indication that a plastic fitting has cracked or a water leak is present somewhere. *The water feed to toilets were a common freeze point. A small elec cube heater in the bathroom helped. In winter, i had to use a winter water spigot to fill my freshwater tank then use my pump to prevent freezing a feed line as well as the campground's hydrant. If possible pre- test the rv in cold temps to see if the furnace ducts are routed in a way to really do a good job of heating. As a test : When i used my rvs for snowmobiling, i placed small water bottles or thermometers under the sink cabinets and in various compartments that housed water lines. Make sure those areas get enough heat. If the bottles don't freeze the water lines and fittings should not freeze either. Sometimes small 12v computer fans need to be installed to move warm air into cold areas of a cabinet. As common sense already suggested , following the weather would be the smart way to spend a year in an rv traveling the U.S. What does 4 season really mean ? Winter in North Carolina is not the same as winter in Manitoba. :B It would be a big plus if the shower water lines and valves were located on an interior heated wall opposed to an outside colder wall. Those designs in earlier years did freeze at times.

RE: Slide for the coachman freelancer m3100

Look into finding the location of the slide-out relay or fuse. Depending how the wires run to your slide, a wire could have been pinched by the slides movement. Check youtube , there are tons of slideout repair vids.

RE: Dreaded White Smoke From Power Stroke

My stock 24’ 2018 E450 6.8 v-10 runs between 190-210 on an average as per my SG trans temps. Long uphill runs on a 95F day shows 210F or so. Running on flat ground on a 95F day it shows 195F. The v-10 has an integral trans cooler from the factory AFAIK but some owners have added an external unit in front of the radiator for extra cooling. Some owners say the V-10 doesn’t need a trans cooler while others have installed one. There are many Youtube videos on how-to and how-not to install one. From what i’ve been told. Trans temp is the most accurate at the torque converter temp. The highest temp the fluid will reach. If your sender is in the pan you’re not going to get an accurate reading. The factory designs this system to ‘balance’ temps between trans fluid and engine oil. Having your radiator, having it clean and flowing is a plus. Many rv owners run these stock Fords over 100k miles without any trans issues. Its possible to run trans temps too cool . In that case, moisture in the system would remain in the system. That’s not good. If you decide to do an add-on cooler, make sure your installer knows what he is doing. Like a reputable trans shop.

RE: DEF fluid expiration?

What till spring and top off with very fresh DEF. X2. Reason : winter temps in ny. Store the new stuff in warm indoors. From DEF website . “Like many products on the market today, Blue Def does have a limited shelf life. But its shelf life is determined by the ambient temperature it is stored at and not its ingredients. To have a 3 year shelf life, Blue Def must be stored at temperatures no higher than 50 degrees F.”

RE: Leveling Scissor Jacks

Chris, You would need to be mindful of a slide-out being near the side you are lifting and lift real easy. I remember a guy who came into the shop with a cracked corner at the top rear drivers side of the slide-outs frame, including the filon. He tried to level it on the drivers side rear just behind the rear axle . The entire top corner at the roof-line split. From the roof down to the slides top right corner as you’re looking at it. I never liked the design of slide-outs in RVs, there is no headroom for a substantial header. Imo, from what i have seen , the slide-out is a weak link in an RVs wall. Maybe not so much on a “million dollar plus” Prevost chassis where it would have more room to beef up the build , but not on an average class C. You would need to be careful to not tweak the frame.

RE: Leveling Scissor Jacks

Yes, i would use wood under rubber then stabilize with the jacks.

RE: Leveling Scissor Jacks

My .02 cents. 1- Installed jacks to the frame will take up 4” of ground clearance while retracted. I guess depending where you install them , that may or may not be an issue. 2- keep in mind that the motorhome parking brake only locks the rears. Even blocking the fronts , don’t get too crazy lifting the rears. You will probably need to carry wood blocks to place on the ground to prevent the jack from sinking in , why not just put wood under the tires where needed. Its less work. I never use my hydraulic jacks since i installed a set if levels inside my cab. All i need to do is move my rig a few feet N-S-E-W to level it.

RE: freshwater pump maddening problem

If u have an outside shower shut off the handles not just the shower head. Check ur ice maker if u have one. Dirt in the check valve or put a check valve on the inlet side to prevent the pressure relieving back up the line ?

RE: freshwater pump maddening problem

Imo , something is leaking. Check the drain on the water heater to be sure its tight. Check all plastic valves, like bypass valves, rear of toilet valve.

Sent them home via airline. The were no longer interested in finishing their RV vacation. I hope you checked the Turbulence Forecast before they embarked on another form of transportation :B

RE: Forest River

Yes absolutely , condition more than brand. If you are downsizing from an A to a C , the ride might be different due to the different chassis. Research the handling end of things. Consider hiring a pro rv inspector to examine it. Might be money well spent ! In general , cabover designs have gotten better over the past 15 years . Older class C’s had more issues with leaking cabovers from roof seams, clearance lights and cabover windows. Look for water stains or painted over panels trying to hide such. Water will seek a low point. Cabover leaks can follow a path and puddle on a floor. Use a flashlight to inspect dark corners.
